What Is a DIY Ceiling Cassette Mini Split?

A ceiling cassette is an indoor unit recessed into the ceiling framing that blows conditioned air in one or more directions, with only a flat grille visible. It frees up wall space and spreads air evenly across open rooms.

"DIY" here means the system ships with pre-charged refrigerant and quick-connect fittings, so no vacuum pump or other HVAC tools are needed (our pre-charged line set guide explains the couplers). Both mount on a flat, horizontal ceiling, but they fit the framing differently: MrCool's one-way OuttaSight fits between standard 16-inch joists, while Zone Air's four-way Airframe body is 22-1/2 inches square and needs blocking or a framed opening. The Airframe includes a built-in condensate pump, so drainage doesn't rely on gravity.

Price checks (September 15, 2026): MrCool's single-zone 12K Hyper Heat cassette system with a 25 ft line set was $3,283 on sale. For two zones, a Zone Air dual-zone cassette system was $4,039.99 ($4,699.97 with two 25 ft line sets), versus $5,886 on sale for MrCool's 2-zone 9K + 12K cassette system. Zone Air sells direct, without a retail layer, which accounts for much of the gap.

Single room: Zone Air's 9,500 or 12,000 BTU Airframe covers bedrooms, offices and garages up to about 600 sq ft on 230V.
